Presentations I’ve given at Lilug
High Availability & Load Balanced Clusters [odp] [pdf] [powerpoint] [flash] [12/9/2008] – This talk begins with a general explanation of high availability clusters and load balanced clusters. Then it covers Heartbeat and Linux Virtual Server and the roles they serve in the cluster. The talk ended with a live demo of a highly available and load balanced cluster that I setup at the meeting. There is a video of this presentation available.
Intellectual Property & Free Culture [sxi] [pdf] [powerpoint] [flash] [10/11/2005] – This talk begins with an explanation of intellectual property and all of the different things that typically fall under that term. It covers trademarks and trade secrets quickly and then moves on to covering copyright and patents in greater detail. The second half of the talk explains what free culture is, how it works, why we need it and what threatens it. This talk was given at LILUG on 10/11/2005 and again at an “Intro to Unix” class at SUNY Farmingdale on 10/19/2005. The presentation at SUNY Farmingdale really only covered the first part of the talk.
Hard Drive Hackery [tar.gz] [flash] [6/14/2005] – This talk is about doing all kinds of weird things with your hard drives. It covers software RAID and Logical Volume Management in Linux. The zip & tar.gz files contain the slides in a slew of formats as well as the notes that I used while giving the talk. If you just want to thumb through the slides, the flash version should play fine if you have flash installed.
Exploring Bash [12/14/2004] – This is a talk all about the Bourne-Again Shell and how to start using it effectively. It is aimed at those who are new to scripting in bash, but there are a few sojourns into guru land. The last script in the presentation is especially neat because it is meant to integrate with ‘nautilus’ and uses the ‘zenity’ tool to a great extent. The scripts are also available.
